Sharing the Joy of Community During the Holidays

The holiday season carries a unique kind of magic—one that invites us to slow down, gather together, and remember the simple power of presence. This year, my brother and I were deeply grateful for the opportunity to share that magic while caroling at Optalis (Canton, MI) and American House (Westland, MI). These experiences left our hearts fuller than we could have imagined.

From the moment we arrived, it was clear that music would be our common language. One resident, whose love for music was as vibrant as his past performance career, eagerly helped guide the festivities. His confidence, joy, and gentle leadership set the tone, reminding us that passions do not fade with time….they simply find new ways to shine.

While Christmas tunes filled the room, moments of quiet beauty unfolded all around us too. A beautiful elderly woman cradled her baby doll, with a smile so bright, it seemed to illuminate the space. Some residents sang along with enthusiasm, while others hummed softly, or simply listened, taking it all in with contentment and ease. Each person participated in their own way, and every presence mattered.

We were honored to be welcomed into their home. We remain so grateful for the warmth and openness they extended to us.

After our time in the common area, we were allowed the opportunity to sing for a resident who was unable to join us due to being bed bound. Her wish for more visitors was simple, yet deeply human. Standing beside her, offering our presence, was a reminder that connection does not require grand gestures—only willingness and genuine care. I won’t forget the beauty of that moment.

These events were simple, yet powerful reminders that we all thrive in the presence of one another. Community matters. During those moments, my brother and I were not just contributing to their community—they surrounded us, and blessed us with theirs. In sharing music, smiles, and time, we were all reminded of what the holidays are truly about: being together, honoring one another, and finding joy in shared humanity.
